Read and honor the survivors experiences in NY TIMES article here: larry-nassar-victims.html
Horrified and Enraged! Every athlete, coach and sport institution/agency/company needs to be LISTENING and WAKING up to what and how this has allowed to happen so many victims for so many years! THIS IS NOT a gymnastics issue. THIS IS NOT a women’s issue. THIS IS an issue with those in POWER over vulnerable athletes. The people/institutions in power need to be held just as accountable as Nassar was. These women will have a life long healing journey of from trauma that SHOULD have been prevented and these athletes SHOULD have been protected!
HOWEVER, this story is far too common and those in a position of power over athletes (coaches, athletic departments, sports med staff, trainers) need to wake up and understand the implications of that power how and how it impacts athletes. Athletes need to feel they have a voice! I am so inspired by these women that bravely came forward to use their voice to heal and for justice to be served. I hope every young athlete has someone that will listen to their voice and take it seriously. I pray that all the survivors find healing, peace and justice they deserve.
THIS absolutely enrages me that no one was able to protect these young people! Not just one incident and one athlete (and one is too many!) but OVER 160 young people were traumatize for years. It is all of our jobs, as coaches, athletes, and sport affiliated professionals to PROTECT those that we are responsible for! It is our job to empower our athletes to use their voice and create a safe relationship, safe space, and safe institution for them.
I ask all of you to pay attention be and a force of support and empowerment for young people, fellow athletes and stand up if you see someone or something is not right. Use your intuition, common sense and good judgement to DO THE RIGHT THING! Protect those that are vulnerable.
Speak your truth. Do the right thing. Protect those that are vulnerable.
