In Chrissie Wellington‘s book Life Without Limits she shares that she studies the poem “If” by Kipling before races and also writes it on her water bottles. I admire her pre-race routine and find that this is also another good way to channel mental energy and “mentally train” during taper week.
My preferred poem is “Don’t Quit.” It has special sentiment because it was taught to me when I first became a member of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. (LTA). Being a part of LTA changed my life and helped widen my world perspective. It has fostered personal empowerment and responsibility for my life. Triathlon has also done that for my life, and continues to do.
“Don’t Quit” embodies for me the spirit of what it is like to work so hard, commit so much, and dedicate to the depths of your mental, emotional, and physical boundaries until you think you can not possibly give more, but YOU CAN, YOU WILL, and YOU DO. So what ever you do my friends… do it with all your heart and soul because you never know what gifts may come back from it.
